Treatment

The main theme for this short is the desire for validation as the protagonist, Frank, has never had his music appreciated as no one has deigned to listen to it. However there is a secondary theme of the desire to be part of something bigger in this case Frank is a solitary lonely busker and so when the other musicians join in he is being validated as a musician and also part of a group. The genre would be musical mixed with a small biography feel.

The overall length of this piece will be from one minute to one and a half minutes, as animating so many people will take time and I wish to do this idea justice. This also gives me enough time to allow the music to build up at a decent pace so the audience keep getting surprised by what’s happening next.
The main character, Frank, is a solitary man who plays guitar so as to meet people and make money. However he never caught a break and so has lost his love for it barely going through the motions of busking. He longs for a spark in his life to make him happy and a reason to enjoy himself, luckily the other musicians in the piece will provide this and so frank will come more out of his shell as the piece progresses.

The target audience for this piece is general as I believe most people could enjoy it, however I acknowledge due to the lack of comedy and the heavy focus on music that it will probably appeal more to young adults and general music lovers. Because of this I plan on writing the music alongside a musician to best tailor it to my story, and as such will be able to control the feel of the piece even more as I help to build up Franks happiness and optimism in time to the build-up of the music and so feed that energy straight into the animation.

In terms of production I will be minimising the workload as best I can by keeping modelling down to a minimum so as to give more time to fine tune the animation. I plan on using free rigs such as the Morpheus rig, as I can create different looking characters that are still in the same style as each other and fully rigged without any time consuming work. This also leads into the environment as most of this animation will take place from a static shot I will only have to model and texture a small section of street and a few instruments. Using the Morpheus rig also leads into the design of the street as I will want the environment to match the characters.

I plan on retexturing the rigs so as to put them in shirt and trousers, then using hair in Maya I will make a dynamic tie so as to show more secondary motion and get more life into the animation.

In order to make the crowd I believe I will animate them separately and then composite them over the top of the animation as I believe this will be the most productive way of doing this and making Franks audience even bigger.

I will be doing all production in Autodesk Maya including modelling and animating, however any sculpting that needs doing will be done in either Mudbox or zbrush. The final composite will be done with Nuke.

Synopsis

We join Frank as he sets up for another unsuccessful day of busking, we see the routine he goes through as he sits down with an empty cap in front of him and starts to tune his guitar. He steals himself for the disappointment to come before starting his set. We, the audience, then see him half-heartedly playing his guitar as the scene is changing around him. It changes; from day to night, from mild to freezing, from dry to rain. As we jump through the monotony of this man’s life.

The weather changes again as it is now sunny and the passers-by have increased slightly in number. He carries on playing the same chords as always, and as we see Frank dejectedly continue, a well-dressed man in a shirt and tie carrying a double bass starts walking in front of him. This man stops and looks across at our protagonist and without ceremony moves to stand by Franks side, and adds his instrument to the song. Frank is completely taken aback by this as his routine has been shattered. A slight smile creeps across his face, as they continue to play as a duet.

A second well-dressed man in the same shirt and tie starts walking past carrying a small drum, he reacts the same way, sees the two together and jumps to other side of Frank. He starts playing a simple beat and adds his instrument to the piece. Frank is flabbergasted and his playing picks up intensity as his happiness starts to work into the music.

A couple passers-by stop and start listening to the music.

A third well-dressed man starts walking by and then turns listening; he clicks his fingers and taps his foot. Frank looks up excited, only for the man to nod and walk off. Frank looks slightly disheartened by this only for the man to appear again pushing a full upright piano next to them he hops onto a stool and starts adding his instrument to the medley.

More passers-by stop to listen as the band forms, the musicians react by upping their game.

A well-dressed woman walks in carrying a trumpet and without hesitation walks up and starts blazing a crescendo of brass over the top of the song. Frank jumps off his seat and plays with more and more energy as the crowd swells ever bigger. He looks to his side and feels the energy and kindness that the other musicians are pouring into him, looks to the other side and then at the crowd and smiles.

The end.

Premise

Frank is a man whose life revolves around music; in fact it is how he earns money. However he is losing the magic after busking on the streets for too long without anything happening in his life. We join him on a day that could change his life forever.

Project Type: ANIMATION
Short Character animation – “The Busker” working Title

The goal I have for my final year is to create a short character animation piece in 3D that is roughly one and a half minutes long. It is a musical piece that follows the exploits of a busker; the piece will be musical in nature but feature no dialogue as I want to focus mainly on the characters movements, and the timings that come with the music being so key.

My personal objectives for the short are to use it as a way to really hone my character animating skills and to be able to have a product at the end that shows off my talents as an animator. I believe that going through the whole process from creation to fruition will help with this and allow me to better myself at things such as key poses and using body language to show the emotions of the character. It also allows me practice with working with a composer as this may be a part of my job in the future years. I also plan to research different methods for animating crowds, I will be looking at 3D and 2D methods to see which would be the best for my project.

In order to make the crowd I believe I will animate them separately and then composite them over the top of the animation as I believe this will be the most productive way of doing this and making, or I may look at other possible solutions.
I will be doing all production in Autodesk Maya including modelling and animating, however any sculpting that needs doing will be done in either Mudbox or zbrush. The final composite will be done with Nuke.

The product at the end of this project will be a one and a half minute 3D animated short that I will have partially designed, and animated and composited myself. I will be then able to use this piece to exhibit at expoTees hopefully, and have a good portfolio piece. The audience for this piece is young adults and general music lovers as I am aware that it will not appeal to younger audience (children) due to the lack of comedy in the piece. However, I do believe that due to the original music and style of animation that it will be well received.
